Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the Teacher Librarian for a near inner city high school (grades 9-12) located just outside the city limits of a major city in Washington state. The school campus consists of 3 fully autonomous small schools (ala the Gates smaller learning communities model) of approximately 300-350 students each. Each school had a particular emphasis to better meet the students future career goals.
While this is a terrific opportunity for the students, it does present challenges to areas like the library that are shared services. We have a very diverse student body with a high poverty level. Approximately 180 of the students are not native English speakers and approximately 100 students are Special Education students with a wide range of disabilities (enrolled in the 3 small schools)
Digital natives need digital tools to further their education! Think of all the innovative ways that a small, simple video camera could be utilized to 1) gather information 2) create a team project or 3) finalize a presentation for viewing in class or over the web.
In order to do this, we need 4 Flip Video Ultra cameras (see picture of New Technology) to replace the old 20th century technology that currently exists. The 4 cameras will create a set of 5 (including one that was purchased independently this year) for students to use for collaborative projects.
You help in funding this purchase will allow students to spread their creative wings, work collaboratively in groups and present their learning in a 21st century manner that is in keeping with their digital orientation.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
