My Students

Have you ever walked into an elementary music classroom? I might be biased, but I think it is just about the best place on Earth! Kids singing, playing instruments, composing music...it is just the epitome of creativity and fun!

I teach general music to an amazing group of about 700 K-5th grade ethnically and economically diverse students.

Our school is in a rural area near a military base, so we have a large population of transient military students. I see each class once a week for 50 minutes, and I try to cram as much music theory and hands-on music making into that time as possible. We have a lot of fun, and we learn a lot of stuff!

Our county has limited resources and cannot offer funding for the arts. We make the best of what we have and sometimes have to get pretty creative in order to offer the students the best education possible. For many of my students, elementary school will be the last time that they ever take music in school. In order to motivate a lifetime of music making, I try to make music class fun and exciting!

My Project

For students in a digital world, my analog methods do not always meet their needs. Students get frustrated and bored with learning the process of making music, because they are used to instant gratification from technology like computers and cellphones. Sometimes it is a struggle to keep them motivated. After all of this hard work learning to make music, they need an exciting finished product!

I want to give my students the opportunity to explore digital music recording and editing through the GarageBand App, and the guitars that we have worked so hard learning.

The problem is that our guitars are acoustic, and we can't connect them to the program. The materials purchased through this project (guitar pickups and digital interfaces), will make that possible! Students will be able to record themselves playing their guitars, then edit and create an amazing musical masterpiece that can be shared and enjoyed.

Potentially, this project will give students a skill that will be useful beyond elementary school. As musicians, these students will be introduced to a tool that can be used in countless configurations, with countless instruments and possibilities. They will be life-long musicians in the making!
