Digital Microscopes for Young Scientists!

My students need four digital microscopes to explore the world around them.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Lamy's classroom raised $595

My Students

My students are inquisitive, hands-on learners. I would like to open their young eyes to the microscopic world around them and in so doing help them understand through direct observation how almost everything around us is made of structures and cells that can be revealed through digital microscopy.

We teach approximately 500 students in grades K-5 and this STEAM technology will be incorporated into my school-wide technology instruction.

This project will help our students develop their scientific, creative, analytical, problem solving, collaborative, and communication skills in an engaging and meaningful way.

My Project

The Library Media Center is an exploratory technology center in our school. All of our K-5 classes visit the Library Media Center each week and these visits provide me with the opportunities to introduce these eager learners to amazing STEAM technology and topics.

Our students are amazed to see and understand how everyday objects look under high magnification.

As a class, they see how table salt is comprised of microscopic cubes and prisms, how a plant stem is made up tiny capillaries that carry water, cells that duplicate and provide its structure, and how a five-dollar bill has microscopic text, fibers, and images embedded on it to prevent counterfeiting. They are also intrigued that they can capture these images electronically, and incorporate what they discover into a report, slide presentations, and video.

As wonderful as our single microscope is, it certainly has its limits. Having one digital microscope and HDMI monitor requires that a large group of students engage in this exploration and not the smaller, self-directed learning groups that are so important in understanding and exploring STEAM topics.

My project, therefore, is to purchase four Crenova WiFi digital microscopes for our students. These digital microscopes are rechargeable and portable, so they can be used wirelessly in the Library Media Center or "out in the field". What is just as intriguing, these microscopes can transmit their images to our school's iPads, so the students can observe and record what they are viewing on the iPad, and share what they discover through digital media.
