My students need a set of iPads to change the way we do math - using Google Classroom, making digital models, recording strategies, customizing learning and saving paper.

My Students
We are a community of inquirers who are eager to ask important questions and to come up with creative solutions to problems. We are an IB school dedicated to innovation and environmental stewardship. Located in the southwest side of Chicago, we serve our community both inside our walls and outside our walls as well. We are mindful humans who love learning.
In our class, mathematics is a lens we look through to make sense of the world around us.
We study patterns, make models, and look for connections in order to reason about mathematical truths. We solve problems in ways that make sense to us and share our strategies. Ultimately, we strive to apply the math we learn to help us be better thinkers and problem solvers.
My Project
Earlier this year I was able to visit an affluent North Shore school district to discuss their STEM program and see their Maker Spaces. In their math classrooms, every student had iPads in their hands and on their laps. They used them in place of paper handouts, where teachers sent out an assignment through Google Classroom and students marked up the digital page with their work. A 5th grade class used an architecture app to design a home using multiple math skills to figure the square footage of rooms, costs of materials, area and perimeter, etc. Finally, students with learning disabilities in a middle school classroom were using a modeling app to create visual models to represent and solve a complex algebra problem alongside their general education peers.
The beauty of having a tool like this in the classroom is the unlimited potential it has to enhance the learning already taking place.
These iPads will be used to help us cut down on the thousands of sheets of paper used a year. They will help me create differentiated learning experiences for the wide range of learners I see every day. They will inspire students to document a problem-solving strategy and share it with a peer. They will help to engage all of my students in the math learning they need to be successful.
