My Students
Take a moment to remember all of the struggles you faced in high school - academic, social, personal - and now imagine going through all of that in a language you were not yet fluent in. When I consider this prospect, I am truly inspired by the English Language Learners at our school in Brooklyn, New York, who approach school each day with enthusiasm and a smile.
Our ELL program includes students from a dozen different countries, from Sudan to China, Latvia to El Salvador, all of whom bring rich voices and experiences to class each day.
We believe in a truly inclusive environment where language is learned socially, so with the exception of English as a New Language class, our students are working side-by-side with the other 600 students at the school. Teachers work together to meet their diverse needs so that no ENL student gets lost in the shuffle. Once they know their voices matter to our community, the stories and experiences they contribute to the classroom are invaluable.
My Project
I strive to create a classroom that truly prepares students for college, and in doing so, I believe "soft skills" like digital literacy are just as important as academic skills. For this reason, I incorporate technology into my classes as often as possible, and this project is for a set of ten Chomebooks for student use.
ESL students will use these Chromebooks on a daily basis - keeping track of their assignments in google classroom, process writing, translation, animation, digitally annotating an article.
It's impossible to list every way a computer can enhance a student's language acquisition, academic skills, and understanding of resources. All of this gives these Generation 1.5 teenagers access to power in their new country.
More than half of students from low‑income households
