Digital Learning for Young Readers

My students need three Lenovo N23 Chromebooks. These will be shared by second and third graders who need to improve their reading and technology skills.

My Students

Our school serves students in grades K-8 in a rural mountain county. Nearly half of our students live in poverty. We do not receive Title 1 funds. Some of my students do not have internet access or a computer in their homes. Their only exposure to technology happens at school.

My students are below grade level in reading, but our early intervention approach gives them an excellent opportunity to become skillful readers.

They are excited about learning to read. They need to learn in the 21st century environment which includes reading with digital technologies. They need access to digital technology for reading, research and skills practice.

My Project

My students need access to computers in our small group reading classes. My classes are only 45 minutes long, and our school has only one computer lab that is quite a distance away from my class. This makes using the lab for instruction an inefficient use of their time with me. I need to bring the technology to my students in order to deliver the best possible reading instruction!

The primary use for the Chromebooks will be on Reading A-Z, an online resource with thousands of interesting, leveled books in fiction and nonfiction.

Other uses will include research online to build background knowledge and to extend learning. The Chromebooks will also provide opportunities for my students to practice the basic literacy skills needed to decode new words and master sight words.
