I work with 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades as their College and Career Counselor, assisting and guiding them with college and career planning. Therefore, what I love most about my students is their eagerness to pursue post-secondary plans. They are excited about their future, and having access to an adequate and working laptop and printer in College and Career Center as a primary resource to assist them in their exploration and planning process is most helpful.
With these items, I can provide my students with readily available information and assist them in digitally navigating through post-secondary planning platforms.
Digital literacy has been one of the Counseling teams focus this year, as we have found that many of our students are lacking in that area. Thus, in an attempt to provide the students I service in my office, I want to be sure I am equipped with current, working, useful devices to work with them in their post secondary exploration and planning, but also teaching them how to professionally utilize these advanced technologies and devices properly. My students are part of a generation where technology has been their main force of communication, further confirming how important it is for them to be knowledgeable in how to utilize these platforms best and the tools to navigate their services.
Although my school has attempted to provide those needed resources to assist, however, as several students come to my office without the necessary or functioning equipment, and I not having them to fill in the gap, it has become difficult to effectively service students. Thus, I have began working towards gathering resources so that the students have what they need in gathering and exploring opportunities. Therefore, having a printer and laptop will provide us with a start in have access to working equipment.
