My Project
As a librarian serving predominantly minority students at our rural Title I high school, I'm seeking resources to transform our library into a vibrant STEM and digital literacy hub. The 2025-2026 school year marks my first opportunity to teach a STEM elective, making these materials crucial for creating an inclusive, engaging curriculum.
I'll use the Apple iPad to explore educational apps that represent diverse innovators before introducing them to students.
During library sessions, I'll create culturally responsive instructional videos that feature scientists and engineers of color. "MC Means Move the Class" will provide strategies specifically designed for engaging our minority students through movement-based learning and culturally affirming teaching techniques that honor their experiences and learning styles.
"Young, Gifted, and Black" will guide my approach to recognizing and nurturing the talents of our African-American students, helping me implement practices that promote high achievement and counter deficit perspectives. These resources, combined with "Culturally Responsive Teaching and The Brain," will ensure my teaching practices celebrate students' cultural identities while building their academic confidence.
STEM books will support curriculum development that highlights contributions from diverse inventors and scientists. I'll implement hands-on activities from "Robotics!" and "Bots!" while incorporating the stories of minority engineers and programmers who have shaped these fields. "Invent to Learn" will help establish assessment frameworks that recognize diverse expressions of knowledge and creativity.
By reimagining our library space as a culturally inclusive makerspace where students see themselves represented in the materials and examples we use, we'll create a learning environment that values their identities and perspectives. The tote bags will organize thematic collections highlighting diverse STEM leaders, extending this representation beyond my elective. Through these resources, I'll develop a program that empowers our rural minority students to see themselves as future innovators in STEM fields where they have been historically underrepresented.
