Digital Documentaries for a 21st Research Project

My project needs a Sony Digital Camcorder, 3 Digital Video Cassettes for recording, and one Belkin Firewire Cable to transfer the Digital Video to the computer for editing and project creation.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. McDougall's classroom raised $459

I have been working at a rather intimidating inner city school in West Harlem for the past two years. During this time, I have tried very hard to not just give them a quality education, but I am trying to give them an education that will prepare them to compete in a 21st century market place. Most of the students in my classroom come from single parent households. Many of them come to school early for the free breakfast program and are also on the free lunch program. It makes me sad to see them come to school with uniforms that are dirty or missing buttons. The one thing that gets me through it sometimes is knowing that I am giving them a chance. I am hopefully giving them a head start at finding the skills to not just be a student, but a producer of knowledge with skills to compete in a rapidly changing digital world. I was very pleased that two of my students competed this year in a Digital Documentary contest in NYC and both of my sixth graders got accepted into the finals of the competition. I had my students do digital documentaries based on something I really try to get them to focus on, ROLE MODELS. They created their documentaries using pictures downloaded from the Internet. At the digital documentary film festival I felt sorry that my students didn't have self created video to add to their film. They had to just use digital images from the internet and due to this their films were not as personal as the films that had video the creators filmed and edited themselves. Next year when they create their digital documentary for the city wide competition, I want them to be able to use their own photos and video, not just still images from the internet. I know that my students will be more willing to work hard on creating research reports, digital documentaries, and exit projects if they could use digital formats. I want them to be producers of their own educational tools. I want them to be competitive in a digital world. That is why I am asking you to please help my students compete by helping us purchase a Sony DV Camcorder, DV Video Cassettes, and Belkin Firewire Cable so that my students will be able to take their education to the next level and become more able to compete in this new educational world.
