Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a youth, I always had an interest in the arts, and in my spare time began drawing comics and writing short stories. Unfortunately, I did not have any outlets or resources readily available to help me develop and perfect my skills. I am certain that if I did have that support, it would have had a tremendous impact on both my academic and personal life. But, despite not having that support or guidance, I continued to work on my hobbies and eventually was able to complete and publish my first novel.
When I began working, I quickly noticed many students whom like me had an interest in writing and art, so for the past few years, I have been running a creative writing/art program for my students ranging from grades 6-12.
It is my goal to support the young men in realizing their creative potential and provide them with the opportunities I did not have at their age, by creating an outlet for them to express that creativity, be it through drawing, story-telling, or any other forms of artistic expression. For the first couple of years of running the program, the students had always created their drawings and artwork in the traditional manner, either by hand in art pads and/or took notes for their creative writings in a notebook. But, with the growing popularity of art mediums like Japanese anime and manga, which utilizes a lot of digital applications, I've noticed a growing desire among the students to move into the realm of digital art and learn how to create their artwork using the technology of today. I am making this request for Surface Pro devices in an effort to provide the students with the opportunity to further their artistic skills utilizing the technology of their time.
