My Students
Every day in class, we start off with a warm-up activity that involves phonics, spelling, or a vocabulary game. We would often use online resources from the computer to make the activity more fun. My students think, however, that it is way cooler to use an iPad apps for our whole group activities.
Although most of my students speak Spanish at home, I have a few that speak Chinese, Bengali, Krio, and Ibo.
They bring to the classroom the richness of their language and culture, which is what makes my teaching really interesting. A few of them have been in the country less than a year and are in the beginning level of English language proficiency. I also have a few English language learners with learning disabilities. Their period of adjustment and assimilation comes at different phases, and it really takes a concerted effort to let them learn the language. We are a Title 1 targeted school with a diverse student and staff population. Almost all of my ESOL students qualify for free and reduced meals.
My Project
My students love to use digital resources in the classroom to reinforce our lessons. Even more so, they love the iPad apps that they use to improve their reading, spelling, phonics, and writing skills. They are definitely more engaged when they are involved in activities that require collaboration. With the Apple adapters, the apps from the iPad can be projected on the big screen so that everybody can participate as a big group.
My students also love to have a digital learning station in the classroom. The Osmo Gaming System is a very innovative way to get them to use critical thinking and creativity while playing. I am very positive that my students would look forward to being in this learning station or center everyday.
Having these accessories will certainly improve my classroom because my students will be more exposed to innovative technology and other digital resources that tap all the modalities of learning.
The 21st century classrooms will need to keep up with technology that actually matters. It is a better option for students to learn and learn new things the fun way.
