My students need a Canon Powershot Digital Camera to take pictures of lab experiments to include in their lab reports.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a high need area in Southern CA. My students come from a world of poverty and disappointment. For some, a kind word at school of "I'm glad to see you today" will be the only good thing they hear that day. I teach high school chemistry at a large urban high school.
My students will all be the first in their families to attend college. Some have already surpassed their parents by reaching the 11th grade. My students have the motivation, desires, and dreams to go to college and I am helping them get there. My part sounds simple but is amazingly challenging and rewarding. I work to help students develop problem solving skills, writing skills, and math skills to be successful in the adult and college world. We have focused on inquiry activities and lab reports this year. By sparking their interest in science with labs (the first labs some of my students have EVER done), I am helping them build a foundation of knowledge to write quality lab reports.
This strategy is working! My kids get so excited when we do labs. Often times my student pull out their cell phones to take pictures of the experiment (which is awesome were it not for the fact that they are not allowed to have cell phones in school). Why are we stifling kid's ability to use the technology they are already familiar with to enhance their educational experience? If I had a digital camera, my students could capture that experience that is exciting them to love science. They could use those pictures to enhance their lab reports in the data section. I could teach them that scientists use all kinds of evidence during an experiment, including pictures in this digital age. I would also use the camera to support a science club that I sponsor (MESA) by taking pictures of different projects students complete and using those pictures to get more students interested in joining the club.
A digital camera would allow me to make my student's lab experiences even better and their lab reports even stronger. It would also allow me to document activities in and outside the class to get students in future years interested in science. If they are interested, maybe they will be motivated to study science in college, and I will have done my job. Thank you so much for considering this project.
