We are a Title One school in a large district where all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch everyday.
My students range from kindergarten to fifth grade, but they all have a few things in common: inquiring minds, enthusiasm and an eagerness to learn.
Most come from low-income families who, while very supportive of our school and mission, simply cannot afford certain types of learning materials at home. We also have English as a Second Language students at our school, with varying levels of English proficiency.
Despite these challenges, my students come to school smiling and ready to learn!
My Project
Our district is launching a Backpack of Skills Initiative to allow students to gain and demonstrate 21st Century Skills. Students will create digital "Backpacks" showcasing what they have learned in these skill areas.
Because the Backpack Initiative is digital, and not all students may have Internet access at home, we need the latest technology in the library to erase the digital divide.
With a new Chromebook for dedicated library use, students will be able to work on their digital Backpacks in the library quickly and at any time. This will allow them to easily include research projects and other library work in their digital Backpacks as well.
More than half of students from low‑income households
