This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For the last 7 years, I have run a video club at FDR Middle and I have found that it is a great way for students to grow as they find their voice and leadership skills. Currently, due to Covid, our entire district is online. The students are craving a creative outlet and a way to connect with their peers. My club, now a Digital Media Arts Club, is more important than it ever was to our adolescents.

The average student in my school comes from a family at, or below, the national poverty level.

It is a challenge for them to learn about opportunities outside of the city. A significant number of students are English as a Second Language Learners and practicing communication skills is very important. Through the power of video making, students find their voice, collaborate, learn about the outside world, and discover their leadership potential.

My Project

What do you want to be when you grow up? This question has been asked to middle school students everywhere; but most adolescents do not know about their local career opportunities.

Students in the R Digital Media Arts Club will be paired with a local Manufacturing Company through the "What's So Cool About Manufacturing?" Video competition.

Students in the club will work with professional mentors to get a sneak peak inside a local manufacturing plant, learn about local career opportunities and obtain advice for personal success.

Following this experience, the club students will create a video, so the entire student body at FDR Middle School can benefit from wisdom the students participating in the virtual tour obtained. With We Video Software, students can collaborate virtually, demonstrate a tour a local manufacturer and teach their peers about potential careers.
