Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a neighborhood public high school in a large urban district. Our students are Latino and come from low income families. Like many schools, we have limited resources. Our students have very little background knowledge in the area of computers, and the majority do not have Internet-connected computers at home. Moreover, they do not have any dedicated art classes for them to express their creativity. Despite these barriers, our students are enthusiastic learners who are excited about gaining computer literacy and using their knowledge of computers and mathematics to create art that they can see and touch. Our district is one of the first in the nation to require ALL high school students to take a Computer Science course for graduation. Integrating visual arts into Mathematics and Computer Science classes will allow students to engage with the content in a tactile fashion and engage their creativity. Students will make art they can share with their friends, family and the world, all born out of their learning in mathematics and Computer Science.

"The future belongs to young people with an education and the imagination to create." –President Barack

My Project

Our students are creating incredible digital art works as they seek to understand the geometry within computer science. Students graph equations to create digital 2D and 3D models; parabolas become hills, sine curves become rivers, and ellipses become faces as students use their understanding of mathematics to create individual and group digital art works.

You can help us bring these digital art works to life through the power of 3D printing.

Students smile when they see their names in print, and they laugh with joy when they see a digital model become an actually touch, throw and bring home to show family and friends. This will motivate our students to synthesize their understanding of mathematics, computer science and art in new ways and will enable them to see the connections between geometry and the forms we see in every day life.

Our student will need one 3D printer to create their projects. They will also need filament in various colors, which is like the ink for an inkjet material; it is the melted plastic that is deposited, layer by layer, to create the 3D object. This will ensure that students have enough material to print all of their projects and provide color choices to realize their artistic visions. The surface that the object is printed upon is a layer of borosilicate glass, typically covered by painter's tape. Students will also need to maintain the printer with a cleaning kit, X-Acto knives, and cleaning filament. Students will also use a Dremel rotary tool and sandpaper to smooth the final surfaces of their printed projects. These materials are essential so that students can create art, so that they can create tangible evidence of their Mathematics and Computer Science learning.
