My students need garden tools including gloves, watering cans, a wheelbarrow and a garden scooter to use as they work in our refurbished raised-bed garden.
My students are young kindergarten students who are eager to get out in the garden to learn. We have a refurbished raised-bed garden and willing parent volunteers who are excited to teach the children about growing flowers, fruit and vegetables.
My students attend a rural, mountain school.
Most come here for the environment and the experience of attending school in a natural setting. Our wonderful garden is a huge part of the learning experience. My children are excited to learn, and learn best with hands=on learning experiences geared to their developmental level.
My Project
My students will use the new garden gloves to prepare the soil and plant seedlings. They will use the watering cans to water the growing plants. They will carry items to and from the garden area in the wheelbarrow and the garden cart. We will use the twine to tie tall plants to stakes, and they will enjoy learning about how plants grow by viewing them actually growing in our classroom with the Root Vue Farm. The children will learn about nature, life cycles and caring for living things. They will celebrate with a salad feast.
This project will make a difference in the lives of the children by allowing them to experience first hand how they can make a difference in the world in small ways, such as growing food in a garden.
