This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Murder. Greed. Jealousy. Love. Betrayal. Sounds like the makings of a great soap opera, right? These ingredients also make for a really good book. They are the key elements of William Shakespeare's brilliant dramatic tragedy, Othello.
My students (largely minorities who qualify for the free-reduced lunch program) are just discovering the brilliance of William Shakespeare.
I plan to introduce students in my AP English Literature class to Shakespeare this coming school year through his sonnets and his play, Othello. I believe my students will love Shakespeare's complexities and deep characters.
My Project
For this proposal, I am requesting copies of Shakespeare's sonnets and his tragedy, Othello, for my students to read. We will spend several weeks in class reading and analyzing the poems and the play, digging into commentary on race, class, and gender. With their own copies, students will be able to make annotations as they read -- a valuable skill that will help them on the AP test and in college. Students will also act out scenes of the play and will analyze the characters' motivations. After all, the best way to really understand Shakespeare is to get up on your feet and do it!
Reading Shakespeare will prepare my students for college by providing them with the skills needed to handle complex works of literature.
It will also provide them with the cultural capital needed for advanced study and the world beyond.
