The Mississippi Gulf Coast is a vibrant, eclectic area full of history, hospitality, and of my favorite - awesome children! My classroom is home to boys and girls of all socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Being located so close to different military bases, I have the privilege to work with military families who are being stationed here for the time being.
The most important thing about about my students is that they are so in love with learning and are always so excited about new activities I have planned for them.
You can't teach enthusiasm, but boy are they full of it! I work hard to keep them engaged and offer chances for them to work alone, with peers, or in small groups with me.
My Project
Nonfiction text can be some of the hardest text to understand, but it can also be some of the most interesting! Often times, students will try to read nonfiction books, but the rich vocabulary can cause frustration. These nonfiction books are all on 2nd grade level, so students will be able to read independently or with a partner successfully.
Having a section in my classroom library of nonfiction books will allow my students to be able to "dig in" the literature and discover new information on topics that they find interesting.
All of the books I have selected are written by the very talented Gail Gibbons, who through the use of hand-drawn illustrations and easy to understand paragraphs offers students in the lower grades the opportunities to learn all about different social studies and science topics.
These book topics are all part of the science and social studies standards for second grade. The students will be able to take the information that they learn in the books and apply it to units of study I have prepared for them to enjoy.
