My Students

We have an amazingly diverse cohort of students, many of whom came from our elementary program. We are a small middle school program designed for public school children who wish to continue with the constructivist (discovery/inquiry) learning that is the hallmark of our school. Many qualify for free- and reduced-lunch.

Our students and their families are committed to academic success and work incredibly hard to attain it.

In my 25 years in education, I have never worked with children so willing to try new and difficult things. Our growth on our state test last year (in both reading and writing) garnered notice from the school district. We are just getting started!

My Project

Our students have become accustomed to using our dictionaries as they read and write, but our 15 old dictionaries are woefully inadequate. With your help, we will have a new, vibrant dictionary for each student for less than $14 per student.

In middle school, students become their own vocabulary teachers; developing a curiosity for word meanings, roots, and origins will prepare them to continue growing as readers and writers long after they leave middle school.

The Merriam-Webster Intermediate Dictionary, revised in 2016, is specifically designed for middle school students. The definitions, word origins, illustrations, and pronunciation guides are all clear and accessible. (This is the dictionary used for the national UIL Dictionary Skills competition!)
