My Students
My students are unique in that they are all TAG - Talented and Gifted - which means that they have scored at the 97th percentile or above on a standardized test of intelligence or achievement.
Worksheets aren't enough!
These students need challenges and chances to go deep into inquiry in a subject, and then the opportunities to express their learning in a variety of ways.
They need challenges and enrichment that our rural, impoverished community can't always provide. These students have the capabilities and the gifts to become wildly successful human beings - but only if we support them.
My Project
Our classes have been studying geology this year, but we want to make the link between all of the rocks we've been looking at in the classroom and the earth that is all around us.
We will use the soil auger and soil testing kits to explore the physical composition and chemistry of the dirt around our schoolyard.
After analysis, we will use the art supplies (oil pastels and paper, in addition to the watercolors and colored pencils we already have) to draw both realistic representations of what we find and stylized drawings of what we could have found.
Linking scientific observations with art will engage more students and will help ensure that they have deep learning about this subject.
