This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The 21st century learner often needs more than their predecessors. In my fifth grade inclusion class, there is no limit to the variety of learning challenges and abilities, and text books alone do not captivate my student's young minds. Technology and other differentiation brings them alive.

My students are an enthusiastic group of 17, urban children age 10-12, coming from a variety of different and more often challenged home lives.

Many of my students have developed a sense of learned helplessness due to being passed along, or retained a school year, without their deficiencies being addressed. Our school is clean, safe, and structured. My students enjoy computers, and we have a technology school base, but lack components of the technology to make it work. For instance, we have a white board, but cannot program it, and lack the software to use it. Science kits are provided but ancillary, and supplemental materials are not. My students work well together, and enjoy learning centers. They are most engaged, with hands on activities, and visually. But our class resources are limited. And more materials, and dynamic differentiation in literacy, science, and health are needed to draw my students into their roles as life long learners.

My Project

With each new idea, or resource I use, my students come alive. They have now taken ownership of our classroom, and learned to move seamlessly, and function independently through centers activities, and the Jeopardy resources will bring alive our incredible, interactive white board now tucked into a corner of the classroom, for all subjects! My student's are very excited at this possibility. My students have struggled through the vocabulary and concepts of motion and design, our current science module. But additional reading materials and activities will facilitate a deeper exploration and differentiate of the content, making it possible for students to generalize the material, instead of just memorizing it for the week, or month. My class library contains leveled books that I provided, but the curriculum text poses a challenge, to my students reading 2-4 grade levels below. I look forward to teaching more and more new reading strategies they will add to their learning toolboxes.

Every tool imaginable and attainable should be utilized to captivate the minds of our young learners.

Strategies, and games, and supplemental high interest materials are a must to keep today's youth engaged. Sadly, my school does not have the resources to ensure the student centered classrooms they expect to see. With these new materials my students will experience more light bulb moments, and as a class a great deal more academic interaction. These tools will encourage all of us to GROW. . .
