My Students
Math: It's the one subject that adults look back on and cringe! Math is a difficult subject for both teachers and students. When teaching math, there are always students who are bored out of their minds because it's too easy, and those who are frustrated because it's too difficult for them.
I teach at a Title 1 elementary school in Arizona.
This year, I will have approximately 30 students in my second grade class for math instruction. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, many who have free or reduced lunch. I will also have several students who are learning English, students with special needs, and students who are quick learners.
My Project
Math is an important skill that all students need in order to be successful in adult life. However, it is almost impossible to meet the needs of all learners while teaching math whole group. What my students need in order to be successful is differentiated instruction. This is why I will be implementing Math Workshop in my classroom this year. Students will rotate in small groups to work with the teacher, complete independent practice, and play math games.
I need hands on games to make this happen. These games will reinforce skills that are being taught, and review previous skills. Not only will this increase academic achievement, but it will foster teamwork and social skills.
This project will increase excitement about a subject that is often disliked by students.
With small group instruction and hands on math games, my students will gain confidence in their mathematics skills.
