My Students

I have 25 of the most amazing 4th graders who are a perfect mixture of general education and ELL students. One thing that makes our school unique is that we are a universal poverty school, so all students are entitled to free meals. We have breakfast in the class, lunch, and many students stay for after school so they can have dinner as well. Even though we come from a very rough neighborhood, you wouldn't know it by interacting with my students.

I have quite a few students who are homeless and have to live in shelters.

Whether due to an abusive parent, or a parent being arrested by ICE, my students have had to encounter the reality of being homeless and living in situations that I just can't imagine. This is the reality of the students that I am lucky enough to call mine.

My students need to know what is going on in the world, not just the 10 square blocks of their neighborhood. My students really need though it quality non-fiction articles written on their level. They are wonderful students, but can sometimes just see the world from their circumstances, and that is limiting. They need to know that the world is big and full of opportunities and struggles so they can see just where they fit in.

My Project

These weekly readers are just what my students need. These publications (Time for Kids and Scholastic News) know how to create entertaining articles that the kids want to read. At the same time the articles are non-fiction which is an entirely different beast for students to learn how to read and understand.

They always have topics that resonate with not just students, but what is current and important in the world.

Students, even in fourth grade need to be gathers of information about the world. THEY are the ones that will be responsible for this planet. They need to know now the challenges they face and be equipped with critical thinking skills and problem solving abilities so they are prepared for the challenges that will face them.
