I teach 3 sections of AP Environmental Science students. What makes my AP students unique is that they are NINTH graders!! They are extremely hard-working students who are challenging themselves by taking an AP course during their first year of high school.
My students learn extremely well through hands-on, experience-based learning.
At the end of each year, I give out a survey and ask students to identify their favorite activities of the school year, and they often point to lab activities and class discussions.
My student engagement is through the roof with my AP students. They are in my class to LEARN and show their potential.
My Project
My 3 sections of AP Environmental Science students will be able to complete this soil formation lab in small groups so that every single student will get hands-on experience and be able to activity participate. *Doing science* is a terrific way to learn about the scientific process, work directly with data, practice critical thinking skills, and master the art of experimental design.
My classroom has eight lab stations, so each class period will be divided into eight lab groups for the duration of this lab.
Soil formation was a difficult concept for my students last year to understand, so having a hands-on lab will hopefully better help my current students understand the process through which soil forms.
