This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are becoming enthusiastic readers! I teach first grade in a low-income, high-need area and most of my students are English Language Learners with little access to English texts.
Many of my students are struggling to reach grade-level standards in reading and writing.
In order to meet their needs, I have included a learning block referred to as "The Daily Five." During this time, students work independently on various skill-building activities while I meet with students individually or in small groups in order to instruct each student at their specific level. It is a constant struggle to find appropriate, engaging, yet meaningful, learning activities that students can do independently. Research has taught me that what they really need is access to more BOOKS!
My Project
With your sponsorship, I can finally provide new and interesting reading options for my students during our literacy block. This includes both fiction and non fiction texts at their independent reading level and classic books on CD that will inspire them.
Your contribution to this project can significantly increase the reading and writing level of my first graders as well as continuing their positive experience with school and a lifelong love of reading!
