I teach sixth grade language arts and science in a rural elementary school in Kentucky.
Many of the students do not have a dictionary at home. The short stories and feature articles in our reading program are very interesting, but the vocabulary is very high. We use dictionaries every day to help visualize and understand the information we are reading. We have found that the dictionaries in our classroom often do not have the words we are trying to define.
We need eight upgraded dictionaries to supplement the dictionaries in our classroom that are more than a decade old. The college entrance exams require that students have a strong vocabulary and building that vocabulary starts in elementary school.
You will make it possible for my students to understand how a dictionary can empower them to complete their work independently as they move into middle school and high school.
