My Students

We are a busy group reading and writing daily. The dictionaries will allow my students to improve these skills."The more you know, the more you grow!" by Dr. Seuss; sums up my goal for my students the more they can learn now the more successful of an adult they will be.

Our school is a rural school with third to fifth grade housed in our building.

We have a diverse group of learners with many ESL/ELL students. Our class is actually a combination of two classes. I teach the English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Reading while my co-teacher takes care of Math and Science. I have a group of twenty-one in the morning and twenty-three in the afternoon. They are a very inquisitive group of learners who are willing to explore and discover.

My Project

We work on a weekly writing assignment in which the student brainstorms on the first day and then begins their "sloppy copy". Once they have meet with me to discuss their writing they then "publish" their work. The dictionaries will assist them in their writing process. We also work on a weekly lexicon in which the students must look up the word, name the part of speech, write the definition, and lastly create a sentence. I currently have 3 dictionaries so the students are limited on their time with each book. Anytime a student asks me how to spell a word or what a word means I look it up in the dictionary and read the meaning along with the part of speech. With the dictionaries each student will have one at his/her desk and be able to look up the word as a group.

This donation will allow my students access to resource materials without having to wait.

Anytime you give a student an opportunity to research and discover the answer to a question on their own you have promoted a higher level of thinking and I believe it will give that student a desire to want to know more. I also believe that the self-satisfaction the student gets from finding the information on their own will improve their self-perception and make a more confident adult.
