Dictionaries (and Games) for Kids

My students need high quality dictionaries to take their state tests. In 7th grade, students are allowed to use dictionaries and we are using a very old version.

My Students

We don't have a school library, so I stock my classroom library with the best resources I can find. We currently need dictionaries. I also asked for educational games for students. Most students don't have board games at home. I want to sneak in some higher level thinking with chess and checkers.

My students are the definition of high needs.

In our school, 25% of our students are homeless and 80% receive free/reduced lunch. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. Some have grown up in the same traditionally African-American neighborhood as their grandparents, and haven't ventured much further than our city limits. Others are first or second generation, Spanish speaking, immigrants to our country. With our wide cultural range, we spend much of our time learning about each other and the characters we read in our texts. There's so much to share and learn just among ourselves.

My Project

My students need high quality resource materials for testing. In 7th grade, students are tested by the state in Writing, Reading, and Math. I teach two of those subjects. My students are able to use dictionaries on their tests and I want them to have the best available. I also requested chess and checkers. I previously submitted a project with games and way under ordered. My students LOVE playing (educational) games as a reward. After testing or during a rainy day, I get out the educational games and the kids (and myself) have a blast.

My students will have access to the same high quality materials that kids on the other side of town have.

Unfortunately, our zip code determines our level of success. With these materials, we are able to level the playing field with the wealthiest zip codes. Dictionaries are obviously a necessity and my chess and checkers request is icing on the cake. I'm hoping to increase my classroom game selection allowing each small group to play chess or checkers.
