My Students
I work in an 8:1:1 program in which all of my students are diagnosed as autistic. My students are high functioning with minimal behaviors. They LOVE pop culture, sports, animals, and reading.
This year I’m fortunate enough to have the opportunity to teach the same group of students I had two years ago!
Since we are a smaller class they often have a hard time finding new books to read in my small library. This group of kids will have an even more difficult time because they’ve already experienced all of the books I have to offer!
Autistic children are very easily distracted and it is difficult to keep engaged for extended periods of time. It’s essential that the books that they read in school captivate them and keep them on task and interested. It’s up to US to provide them with fun new ways to engage with literature!
My Project
Reading shouldn’t just be engaging, it should be an everyday adventure. Sometimes the books that are in our classrooms are outdated.
Children with autism need to feel connected to, and engaged by what they're reading.
I’m hoping that with your help my students will walk in to my classroom in September and run right to the library. It’s so very important to grow our children to have a life long love of literature. We can’t do that with old tattered books. These children deserve a colorful library filled with a wide variety of titles and genres and you can help us get there! Thank you!
