My Students
Most of our students are first generation immigrants from countries all over the world. They face many challenges on a daily basis such as conquering their language barrier, adjusting to life in a new country and all that comes with being a middle school student. This year they have an even bigger challenge to conquer, as many of my students will be returning to a school building for the first time since March 2020.
As a Title I school which is considered high poverty, many of my students do not have the luxury of utilizing sports equipment or participating in athletics outside of their Physical Education class.
This year it is my goal to help my students re-establish healthy habits in order to rebound physically and mentally from the trauma caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
My Project
In order to maintain a safe and active environment for my physical education students this school year, we will need equipment that is easy to sanitize, store, and can be used individually. It is our goal to maximize activity time while ensuring that we are keeping our students safe, we will be able to accomplish this if we have enough equipment for each student.
Providing my students with Diabolos (Chinese Yo-Yo's) during physical education class will help increase the tremendous amount of sedentary time they have experienced as a result of COVID-19.
Diabolos are a game in which a two-headed top is thrown up and caught with a string stretched between two sticks. A Diabolo unit would be an excellent addition to our Physical Education curriculum this year because it would allow for students to work on their eye hand coordination individually. This is a skill that they will use when they play traditional team sports in the future. In addition, students have a high success rate trying to master different tricks with a Diabolo which would motivate my students to continue to be active.
