Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Art 1 students want to paint the entire school! They all say it is a nice school but it currently has a drab and uninspired feel except where we have painted. They do not just see brown walls but a series of blank canvases, on which their voice and culture can be shared with the school community.

Our job as artistic members our community is to represent the cultures of the school visually for all to enjoy.

The majority of families have Mexican heritage. Many of the students are bilingual in Spanish and English. We want them to feel like they have ownership over at least some part of their school. That our students belong to our learning community.

My Project

Dia de Los Muertos is a celebration of the dead in the Mexican and other Latin cultures. Our school has decided to celebrate this festive event at our school with our students' families and school staff. Our school's families predominantly have Mexican heritage. Dia de Los Muertos is no longer a tradition owned by Mexican culture- it has been adopted worldwide. So, not only will the event be serving our families with Mexican heritage but anyone of any culture is welcome to celebrate their loved ones that have passed on.

Mural painting is also a part of the Mexican culture that has gone beyond the country's borders and landed right on our school.

During the event, we will paint a mural on a 30' x 10' wall that will be in the Dia De Los Muertos theme. The mural will have images of sugar skulls, skeletons, papel picado, and offerendas.

In preparation for this mural, my students will make sugar skull masks. The masks will be made out of plaster cloth right on the students' faces! Then, the students will paint them according to Dia De los Muertos traditional sugar skull design. After completing the masks my students will have a greater understanding of the design and how to draw them before designing the mural. It is easier to draw something if you first make it, feel it, and have spent many hours with the physical object before representing it in two dimensions.

During the celebration, my students will be able to wear the masks that welcome the souls that have passed on for just one night.
