This project is fully funded
I teach a group of delightful hard-working scholars in an inner-city Chicago high school. My students are enrolled in a program for struggling readers. As their English teacher, it is my job to inspire them while boosting their reading levels.
One of my main goals each year is to help my students enjoy reading on their own. This is a challenge because many of my students come from homes lacking print materials - even magazines and newspapers. My students are used to being entertained by video games and television and often view books as something they only need in school. I am trying to fill my room with books at various reading levels that are highly interesting. Unfortunately, my school does not provide me with funds to build an independent reading library. I have scoured garage sales and used book stores, but sometimes a new book can make all the difference.
This proposal will allow my students to choose books that will appropriately challenge them and interest them. Independent reading has been proven to increase student confidence, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and even writing more effectively than any scripted basal program. This is why I want to make more time for it every day in my classroom. In order to do it, I need more modern young adult books so that each student can have many books to choose from.
This experience will definitely boost student achievement. By funding this proposal, you will not only contribute to increasing student self esteem and reading levels, but you will help create lifelong learners.
