Devoted Dog

My students need a facility dog.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Hedges's classroom raised $1,187

Wouldn't you love to have someone who always listened to you, always loved you, and never had an unpleasant thing to say? I think everyone could use someone like that in their lives including my students. All three of those qualities describe a facility dog. I teach second grade in a high need community. A facility dog will not only help my second graders, but will help all the children in the school.

Many of our students come from homes with very low incomes. Some of the families struggle to get enough food on the table and proper clothes for their child. Many children are in homes with one parent. That parent has to be the sole provider for all of their children. Many parents have to work long hard hours to provide for their family. Some parents have only enough time to help with homework and eat dinner. Some families do not have quality time to sit and talk about the day, or read with their child, or talk about how the child feels about life. The neighborhood I teach in is strongly affected by violence and drugs. Imagine coming to school with all of those concerns on your mind.

This is a very unique opportunity for our students. A facility dog can be used for many different tasks in a school. Statistics have shown that a child's fluency rate can improve by reading to a dog. The dog will never stop and correct you, they are excellent listeners, and never make fun of the way you are reading. This helps give a child self-confidence when reading. We have special education students in our school. A facility dog can help the child remain focused on his or her work. Emotionally, this dog can help everyone. The dog could help a child who is scared of school. The dog could help the child feel more comfortable and the child could have an instant friend. Sometimes children need a way to calm down: what could be a better way than to pet a dog. The dog can just sit and listen to a child's problem. Dogs have a calming effect on children and adults. Our students can also learn responsibility from the dog. They will help take care of the dog. The students will learn how to brush, bathe, brush the dog's teeth, feed, walk, and provide the basic needs for the dog. I know this dog will touch so many lives.

Please help the children at my school get a new friend. You will make it possible for my students to have a friend and companion who gives unconditional love no matter what. The children, parents, and the staff will all benefit from a facility dog.
