As one of the school counselor and mental health specialists, my main responsibility is to address the needs of the "whole child" and treat every student holistically. My students come with varying needs, and over 95% belong to impoverished homes. Their diverse cultures, needs, and experiences mean that one size does not fit all.
At my school, I wear many hats and I facilitate a vast diversity of students' and teachers' needs alike.
Currently, the capacity of my school's budget has been limited, and non-core subjects materials are paid for out-of-pocket. I take an active role in my students' lives and also facilitate our teachers' needs. I teach and visit classrooms daily and give presentations that build character and educate the students about hygiene, core values, and social behavior.
I serve students in a school where over 90% of our students receive free or reduced lunch and our school is located in a low-income area, my students and our staff struggle with getting current technological equipment. Currently, the counseling office does not even have a working printer. Most of my counseling students receive special education services and some of them have extremely delayed language abilities.
I would love to be able to have a laptop that is current, updated, with a new battery that can keep up with the energy of our 21st-century students.
We will use the laptop with Social Emotional Learning apps that will allow students' minds to destress and lessen their anxiety by being involved in yoga, mental health exercises, and puzzles. This laptop will be used with a variety of mental health and wellness applications for my counseling students.
I will also use this device to have my students create mental wellness cards and printouts.
