Developing Wings to Fly through Multi-Sensory Phonics Instruction
I need your assistance to gain a deeper knowledge of explicit, systematic multi-sensory phonics instruction to develop the reading skills of students with special needs and those identified as at-risk in the regular education classroom.
I am requesting a portion of the funds needed to attend a conference on multi-sensory phonics instruction utilizing the Orton-Gillingham method. The Orton-Gillingham method is a direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling does not come easily to students. This five-day, 30-hour professional development, endorsed by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), will provide me with information about the structure and foundation of the English language as well as the research behind the science of reading. It will also provide me with a basic knowledge of how to assess and teach students in all three tiers of RTI (Response to Intervention). Upon completion, I will be able to evaluate and teach students…identified as at-risk readers as well as those with dyslexia and special needs… in the areas of phonological skills, phonics/word recognition, spelling, writing, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
This conference will allow me to implement explicit, systematic, multi-sensory phonics instruction to meet the needs of ALL at-risk readers.
I am truly grateful for your consideration in my project. Your donation allows me to grow as a literacy educator which in turn grows my students. My promise to you is that your donation will be utilized immediately to benefit students in my classroom as well as students in after school tutoring. The knowledge gained will also be shared with other literacy educators creating a school-wide impact. With your help, we can develop the wings of readers; so that they can fly!! Gratefully yours, Kristine
