Remember that project in school that you worked so hard and it was something that you could be proud of? Today many of our projects made using technology so our kids can be ready to advance our technological world.
My fourth graders are creative, passionate, and enthusiastic students who love hands-on technological experiences.
Often when they can use what they have learned in curriculum to create a project to better their own community.
My students are in a TurnAround Arts School in the Westside of Chicago. Living in the North Lawndale community has posed many challenges in terms of access to technology, academic progress, as well as community challenges such as violence and trauma. These struggles have only made our student successes that much more awe-inspiring.
My Project
Much of our technology is not compatible a lot of our equipment is not up date to integrate 21st century standards. Having access to Chromebooks would allow an easier long term cheaper solution that will have a greater impact on their education. For example buying a single book set on a topic versus using Chrombooks to have infinite access to texts and programs.
There are so many programs we would have access to that would allow students to work collaboratively on writing or STEAM projects or exploring the world we live in.
To keep up with our science and technology PhET Sims to increase STEAM literacy. Teachers can filter simulations by grade level and topic and use them to explore different ideas in the classroom. The goal of this organization is to increase STEAM literacy worldwide and create engaging interactive content that encourages students to ask questions and explore topics beyond what the common core demands. Another program is Learn About the WorldThe goal of Learn Around the World is to use technology to connect students and educators globally. They have events and collaborative projects where students can work with people in different countries, and virtual field trips for exploring foreign lands. LATW also has guest speakers and private events that teachers can take advantage of. Imagine speaking with someone who lives in Buenos Aires while learning about Argentina. Your students can ask questions and use their curiosity to spur discussion.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
