Developing Number Sense With SumBlox

My students need a set of SumBlox math manipulatives to gain a better understanding of number sense.

My Students

My students are fun, compassionate, and curious young children. When they arrive to school in the morning, they race to the schedule, excited to find out what is on the agenda for the day. Every day is fresh, new, and exciting!

My diverse, primarily low-income school is located in a tight-knit community in the heart of San Francisco.

Many of my students' cousins, parents, and even grandparents have attended our school! We also have a large number of immigrant families whom we welcome with open arms. The community bond shows through as students giggle, play, and learn together throughout the day.

My Project

Strong number sense gives a child the power to understand how numbers work and see them as being logical and meaningful. Developing number sense in the early grades has a huge impact on a child's ability to grapple with complex tasks later on.

SumBlox are number-shaped blocks in which each block's height corresponds with its number.

For example, a 7 block is taller than a 6 block, and if you stack a 1 block and a 3 block, that combination will be as tall as a 4 block.

To me, SumBlox seem like an excellent tool for students to use independently during math centers. They invite students to learn through play, which makes them both engaging and powerful. I envision students using them to explore addition, subtraction, and number composition. I am always looking for new ways to help students master difficult concepts such as addition and subtraction, and SumBlox are an innovative new tool that I cannot wait to try out!
