Developing Map Skills and Encouraging Creativity

My students need 30 laminated maps, 2 supplemental books on Washington DC, a color printer, and 3 packs of photo paper.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Broullire's classroom raised $576

This project is fully funded

I teach 10th grade DC History in a public charter high school in Washington, DC. 100% of our students are African American and 95% of my students live in Wards 7 and 8. Unfortunately, this is the area of our nation's capital most plagued by poverty and crime. However, our school is a beacon of hope for our students and their families.

My students love showing their creative sides, and I am always looking for innovative projects that allow my students to show their creative sides and learn a lot in the process. This year, I would love for my students to create "Washington, DC from A to Z" books. This will be a culminating project that asks students to incorporate everything they learned about DC History into a book they can share with others. Through a very gracious donation, we have the resources to bind their books together, but now we need a color printer so students can print off pictures they take in their community and include them in their books. Unfortunately, our school only has access to black and white copies. Second, my students desperately need to learn map skills. This is such an important skill that the vast majority of my students did not get in middle school. A class set of laminated DC History maps would be very helpful. My students can use a dry erase marker to mark on the map and easily wipe them off for other students. These maps will also help them discover new parts of their city, as many of my students do not leave the Anacostia area.

A class set of laminated maps, 2 supplemental books that will help them create their own books, and the color printer and paper will be essential to making a more engaging and productive DC History class.

Please help my students acquire map skills and create their own Washington, DC from A to Z books. They will be so proud of their work!
