My Students
My 10th grade students live in a suburban town in the Arkansas Delta. The area is very impoverished, with 100% of students receiving free breakfast and lunch. With limited access to contemporary, young adult fiction, students in my English 10 classes are starving for good books.
I require my students to read six books each grading quarter, and often times the books in our High School Library are above the students' reading levels.
As I build a diverse classroom library that will entice students to read, I would like to expand that by providing audio books for my low-level readers.
My Project
My students need 30 copies of new young adult fiction books for our classroom library. Book sets will be used for students to learn in Literature Circles. Lit Circles allow students the opportunity to share their reading experiences with others, and more fully immerse themselves in the text. Reluctant readers have high success rates in Lit Circles, where they can discuss how they felt when reading, and learn from other students.
