Help me give my students engaging texts that speak to them and in which they see personal connections. To develop adult readers, we need to provide interesting reading experiences to students.
Teaching reading is both rewarding and challenging. Students come to the classroom with incredibly diverse backgrounds, making it difficult to find texts that resonate with everyone. Traditional literary classics, while valuable, don’t always engage students or make them feel seen or empowered. In fact, most adult readers don’t choose classic texts for pleasure—they seek books that speak to their lived experiences and reflect their world.
This project is about inspiring students to become passionate readers.
When we can ignite a love for reading, we lay the groundwork for success—not just in reading academic texts, but in understanding and navigating the world around them.
We owe it to our older students to rekindle that spark. By providing access to a wide range of contemporary and culturally relevant books, we can empower them to discover authors, stories, and perspectives that truly speak to who they are—and who they can become.
