My Students
Do you remember finding the first book that you really fell in love with? The first time that you truly enjoyed reading? Imagine how that feeling can turn a resistant reader into an avid one!
My students come from an array of backgrounds, all bringing a unique outlook on life.
The majority of them are economically disadvantaged and a large majority of them struggle academically. They are genuinely kind-hearted children with a deep desire to learn - many just do not have the accessibility as some other students might.
My Project
In my reading and writing class we learn through the workshop model where students read books at their independent reading level. They explore concepts of theme, character, and conflict by writing about their ideas. My students need several sets of books including Forged by Fire and The Skin I'm In.
The use of interactive tools such as highlighters and post-its encourage students to do these things while having fun. In addition having engaging books for students exponentially increases their desire to read!
I have witnessed the power of engaging texts.
Students WANT to read. They enjoy it. This love for reading transfers into life goals and successes. Providing students with accessible and interesting reads while helping them feel capable sets them up for academic success.
