My Students
Do you remember the first time you sat down to play Candy Land? Did you long for the perfect color combination or character card? How about rolling the perfect number to move ahead of your opponent? These are memories and skills I want to bring to light for my students.
My first graders attend a Title I school in Oregon, where over 44 languages are spoken.
Our classroom is made up of 25 diverse students.
In our classroom alone, there are 8 languages spoken. Not only are there diverse language needs within my classroom, but each student has distinct learning needs. With such a strong ESL population language development is important.
My Project
I am asking for board games such as Candyland, Sorry, Hi Ho Cherry-O, and Chutes and Ladders to provide my students with tools to practice language. Each of these games allows students to learn good sportsmanship, while conversing about the play at hand. Other games that I am requesting such as Jenga and Shut the Box teach students strategizing skills, which yet again allow them to converse with their peers. Each of these games will provide language support in both literacy and math. By recognizing patterns with colors and numbers students will enhance their mathematical language.
This project will provide my students with the tools they need to develop and practice positive language skills when working with others.
We live in a very diverse world where we need to be able to communicate with those around us. This project would be a step in that direction.
