Developing Language Skills

My Students

I am currently a fully self-contained, preschool special education teacher in a Title I elementary school in Hawaii. More than half of my students are from low income families. I have preschool students with various disabilities and delays including autism, fine motor, gross motor, speech/communication, behavior management, social emotional needs, developmental delays and medically fragile.

My students are full of energy, loving, caring, spirited and eager to learn group.

My Project

Receptive and expressive language/speaking skills are areas all my students need to develop. I would like my students to improve in their conversations, to take turns when speaking, to say what they're thinking, tell stories, describe feelings, share their experiences, make requests and make verbal choices.

Physical movement through the use of building with the large cubes, wagon rides, playing with bubbles and riding toys are ways to motivate and encourage my students to use their verbal skills.

This is a sure way to get them talking and Kindergarten ready. Having verbal skills is an important part of going into kindergarten. This is where they will need to work on listening, talking, reading, and writing skills.
