This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach second grade in a Title 1 school. My students are at or below poverty level living in a suburb of Los Angeles, California. All of my students qualify for a free breakfast and lunch. My class consists of 12 amazing girls and 10 "ready to go" boys. They enjoy being challenged academically and physically everyday. They are in the Limited English Proficiency program levels 1 and 2. My students are creative, inquisitive, hard working, and eager to learn about the world around them, as well as themselves. In the classroom my students work in a whole group, independently as well as in teams. They encourage each other to grow and explore their wonderful world of learning. My school is in a large district in Los Angeles.

In my classroom music is an important subject because it gives my students a way to connect with each other naturally.

Through music my students learn to be social, I encourage them to build relationships by providing them experiences to share with each other.

My Project

By nature, students get happy and engaged when there is music. My students had an opportunity to have hands on musical instrument when we went to a music class once a week. Now that our eight weeks of music instruction are over, my students won't have any opportunity to get the musical training needed to engage with each other and most importantly to develop the areas of the brain related to language and reasoning.

If my project gets funded my students will: make music in our own classroom, continue to engage with each other in a meaningful way, develop the areas of the brain related to language and reasoning, improve craftsmanship, and will continue creating good work instead of mediocre work.

Having music in the classroom reduces stress, relieves frustration and creates a peaceful classroom environment.
