This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students arrive at 8:10 and leave at 4:00 pm. It is a long day for such young learners, and we have a very busy schedule. Each day is action packed - we have a lot of material to cover in kindergarten. The staff at our school does everything it can to help ensure our students' success.

We try to utilize every minute of the day effectively - but passing out and organizing materials takes up a surprisingly large amount of time.

The students in our kindergarten classes are active, diverse, and need a lot of support throughout the school day. This year, we have 24 kindergarten students supported by a teacher and a teaching assistant, and a foster "Grandma." Our school is located in an urban neighborhood and the majority of our students are affected by poverty.

My Project

We have an extended school day and little time is set aside in our schedule for passing out and cleaning up materials. Our goal is to provide each student in our classroom with a chair pocket to store the materials that they will use throughout the day. This will cut down on the amount of time we spend passing out materials and that students spend out of their seats collecting materials from cubbies.

We hope that having chair pockets will cut down on wasted time during the school day.

It will also require students to be responsible for their own materials and more independent learners.
