Brain research has taught educators how best to help students become readers. Students need to learn the alphabetic code- sounds and the letters that represent them. My students are working hard to learn the code and they need to practice what they're learning.
Decodable books allow students to practice blending the sounds and spelling patterns they are learning.
They will read books that have the sound/ spelling patterns they've just learned in class or ones they may be struggling with. The extra practice sounding out words is just what they need to solidify their learning and become confident readers.
The ability to be a good reader opens doors for students in the future and having decodable books for them to practice is an important step for their future success.
