Developing English Language Skills Through Writing, Reading, and Playing

My Students

Many of my students have specialized language needs including explicit language instruction in social and academic language. At the same time, there are also students that I serve that have more typical reading and writing skills, which I also strive to expand and build on their skills to ready them for the world beyond high school. I provide speech-language services to deaf and hard of hearing students of various ages, grades, English language levels, and exposure to education.

My students need a new mix of language therapy resources to create engagement, diversity and variety in weekly lessons for several grade bands.

My Project

I am on a quest to expand my resources of writing and reading materials for several grade bands that integrate Common Core, various English language grammar and vocabulary concepts, as well as functional language skills for my middle and high school students. Through materials that identify writing traits, paragraph formation, and reading comprehension, my students who are more on grade level will be able to expand their abilities. The community safety signs and shopping games will be used to practice functional language skills for my students with more intense needs.

These materials will be useful in providing a variety of reading, writing, and vocabulary scenarios that I can integrate into therapy activities.
