it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Each morning I load up my art cart with the materials needed to teach my five classes for the day. I travel to each room, as there is no art room. Students have art in their classroom. They look forward to their favorite class and eagerly await the sound of the cart coming down the hall.
My students attend a K-5 school in a high poverty, inner city area.
Our student population is over two thousand. Almost all qualify for free, federally funded lunch. Our students are eager to learn and participate and are bright, talented and artistic. 95% are English Language Learners. My students love art because they can express themselves without having to struggle with words
My Project
This project will give students access to basic drawing materials including drawing pencils, sharpeners, erasers and paper. The children will participate in open-ended drawing activities to develop drawing skills such as creating 3 dimensional forms and value scales. They will be creating still life pictures as final projects.
My students would be thrilled to have quality drawing materials such as drawing pencils, erasers and sharpeners and good, quality paper.
For many, art class is a place to express themselves freely, without being inhibited by language. It provides them with much needed confidence. Art class gives them an opportunity to have fun, socialize and feel good about themselves and the art they create.
