My Students

Do you remember your history classes in school? Did it involve reading the textbook and answering the questions at the end of the chapter? There's more to history than that! I want to make sure my students go BEYOND the textbook to think, investigate, and analyze like real historians.

My students are hard-working, bright, highly gifted and creative teenagers.

Our public school has a diverse student population, with kids coming from all over the Los Angeles area to attend our performing arts magnet, math, science, and civics academies. We are a California Distinguished School, recognized for outstanding achievement in education.

My Project

Document-based questions (DBQs) are regularly used in high school Advanced Placement classes to engage students in university-level activities. The DBQ project has created several volumes of DBQ questions that correspond to the California History curriculum. I am requesting Medieval World History Mini-DBQ set for my seventh grade classes. These questions challenge students to go beyond the basic, surface level questions and engage in "close analysis and interrogation of documents, deep reading for understanding, and powerful evidence-based writing."

I want to prepare my students for their high school and college courses--the DBQs will do just that.

It will develop their critical thinking and analysis skills. It will help them refine their writing. In other words, it will help them become historians.
