My Students
I am a first year elementary school art teacher at a k-12 public school. My students are so excited to have art back in their school day. Everyday I receive so many hugs, thank yous and many comments about how excited they are to be coming to art. It is beyond refreshing. They are happy, calm and energetic. Teachers inform me how much their students love coming to art. When I walk across campus, I feel like a movie star with all the "Hello, Mrs. Pettis' " I am blessed to hear making every second I pour into my job worth it. The feedback I have received from my sweet students speaks volumes of how much they're enjoying art. They inspire me to be the best teacher I can be.
My Project
The school district I teach in was heavily impacted by Hurricane Michae, a category 5 storm that ripped through our city leaving it in complete disarray. lt left a large portion of our students homeless, their parents jobless and families living in unfavorable conditions. If that was not enough, then we were hit with the pandemic. My school is a Title I school so the impact all of these conditions have played have played a role in the successful outcome of our children.
As a passionate art teacher, I plan to create exciting art projects that will inspire my students to develop their higher order thinking skills, deepen their math knowledge and reading skills through fun and exciting art activities.
Art helps teach students how to creatively organize their thoughts, develop problem solving skills and to make sense of how other subjects such as math play a role in the real world. Helping develop these skills in the art room will flow into their other areas of learning making them a more well rounded student. Using historical forms of art, researching cultural backgrounds and exploring a variety of artists provides students an opportunity to further develop their understanding of the world around them.
My students have been excited about art this year. They love to explore new ideas and subject matters so providing them with a variety of materials to create art will help keep them engaged in the classroom. Schools took such a hard hit from Hurricane Michael, had to close schools, rezone students, lost many teachers due to the lack of affordable housing. Funds have been stretched thin with having to rebuild and major repairs. Being creative and dedicated I will provide my students with an exciting opportunity to expand their level of thinking.
